AHIS (UK & Ireland) Progress so far


MEETINGS

1. We had an inaugural meeting in Edinburgh in 1993 with representatives from veterinary schools, charities, commercial and government organizations. 

2. A meeting was held at the Central Veterinary Laboratory in March 1994 at which the speakers were Dr Clive Weeks (Current awareness at ICI); John Alborough, Editor of Veterinary Review (Availability of market research); Tim Cullen, Natural Resources Institute (Government information sources); and Dr Mike Meredith, Pig Disease Information Centre (Gathering and marketing information).

3. The meeting in April 1995 was held on the topic of The Electronic Jungle and included detailed Internet information for our own subject area, with speakers on the new IVIC/GTI system, wildlife information networking, and "hands on" Internet experience.

4. The 1996 Conference focused on the topic of Promoting and charging for Information Services: a contradiction in terms?

5. Speakers discussed the pros and cons of charging and charging mechanisms. The meeting also incorporated the 1996 AGM.

6. The 1997 Conference theme was Learning & Information Sources: the Way Ahead. Speakers discussing the topic which included multimedia education programmes and continuing professional development as well as a wider view of possible future directions were Derek Law (King's College), Mike Davies (IVIC/GTi), Andrew Short (CLIVE), Liz Dauncey (Kew Gardens), Peter Burnhill (EDINA) and John Taylor (UCVE, RVC). Again the AGM was incorporated into the meeting. 

7. The 1998 Conference explored Grey Literature in Animal Health with the title Exorcise your Grey Matter: Grey Literature in Animal Health. Speakers included Peter Auger (Peter Auger Research Services), Ann Sylph (Zoological Society of London), Tim Cullen (Natural Resources Institute) and Alan Gomersall (British Library, SRIS). The AGM was once again held as part of the meeting.

8. The 1999 Conference explored Quality vs Quantity on the Internet. Speakers included John Kirriemuir (OMNI), Phil Bradley (Internet consultant), Chris Armstrong (CIQM), Martin Alder (Veterinary Record), Mike Davies and included product demonstrations from CABI and Vetstream The AGM was once again held as part of the meeting. 9. The 2000 Conference focused on hybrid libraries and was held at Edinburgh Zoo. [View programme]

10. The 2001 Conference focused on the problems of accessing electronic full-text. [View programme]

11. The 2002 Conference in the wake of the UK's foot and mouth disease outbreak examined Animal Health in a crisis: information for professionals, decision makers and the public. [View programme and presentations]

12. The 2003 Conference explored changes that have taken place in the information world over the last 10 years, and looked at possible future developments. [View programme]

13. The 2004 Conference explored changes that have taken place in the veterinary profession and how this affects the information requirements of practitioners and researchers. [View programme]

14. The 2005 Conference explored the challenges facing the information profession in connection with education, Europe and emerging diseases. [View programme] [View presentation by Paul Harwood (674 KB ppt)]

15. The 2006 Conference had the theme “ Empowering through publicity and promotion”. The conference aimed to help information professionals determine how to raise the profile of an information service by ongoing, targeted promotion and training. [View programme]

16. The 2007 Conference has the theme “Tomorrow's Technology Today” [View programme]

Join us in Edinburgh for our conference and participative workshop. The speakers in the morning will bring you up to speed with developments in such diverse areas as Library 2.0, open access initiatives and animal welfare and ethics. In the afternoon there is an opportunity to learn about and use key products available to the animal health information community.

It is anticipated that AHIS (UK & Ireland) will hold one meeting annually of this kind plus other informal meetings and visits.

NEWSLETTER

A six-monthly NEWSLETTER has been produced. We now need items of interest from members and non-members.
